Express Entry – Skilled Worker – Application for Permanent Residence to Canada

The Express Entry (EE) system is a multi-stage Canadian immigration process.  Applicants begin with an EE profile online once various other requirements including recognized language testing and an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) are completed. Next, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ranks these potential applicants using specific eligibility criteria. Profiles of applicants who are found to have met the eligibility criteria are then placed into a pool with other eligible candidates. Those candidates whose profiles are found to match up with identified requirements of the Canadian government for skilled workers, as well as that of certain Canadian employers, will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA).  Those candidates who receive ITA’s can then proceed to apply for permanent residence to Canada.

Completion of a Candidate’s EE Profile

  • skilled work experience;
  • language abilities in English and/or French;
  • educational background and Canadian equivalency; and
  • other required details regarding eligibility

Comprehensive Ranking System

Candidates will be ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) on the factors above. Candidates that have an Arranged Employment job offer, a provincial nomination, certain relatives in Canada with PR or Citizenship status, Canadian post-secondary education will receive additional points. All candidates in the EE pool will be assessed a score that considers the following factors:

  • Skills and work experience
  • Spouse or common-law partner factors (language skills and educational level)
  • Skills transferability
  • Supplementary points for those with a Provincial nomination, Arranged Employment or Canadian post-secondary education

Express Entry Draws

IRCC holds regular draws issuing ITA’s to candidates in the EE pool.  The minimum score required changes depending on the number of candidates in the pool at the time of the draw.  Once an ITA issues applicants are required to submit a complete application for permanent residence (e-APR) within 90 calendar days of being issued an invitation to apply (ITA).  No extensions of time are granted.
